NEW YORK (Reuters) – The United States should implement another support package to ensure workers can stay safely at home while the novel coronavirus continues to spread, Chicago Fed President Charles Evans said in an interview with CBS News released on Sunday.
Evans said it was up to U.S. lawmakers to protect small businesses and vulnerable communities with measures that ensure they can continue to pay their rent and buy food as long as the virus was not under control.
“I think that public confidence is really important and another support package is really incredibly important,” Evans said on CBS’s Face the Nation program.
He also said that the most pessimistic economic projections involved not supporting state and local governments, which in turn would have to implement drastic cuts to support some of the federal aid measures.
Evans’ comments come after U.S. lawmakers failed to strike an agreement on a second aid package after weeks of negotiations, leaving tens of millions of unemployed Americans without direct federal support.
U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin on Sunday said they were open to restarting COVID-19 aid talks.
U.S. President Donald Trump on Saturday sought to take matters into his own hands, signing executive orders and memorandums aimed at unemployment benefits, evictions, student loans and payroll taxes. Some of his orders raised questions about the legality of bypassing Congress’ constitutional powers to tax and spend.
Under Trump’s plan, unemployment aid would have to be partially funded by U.S. states, which have already struggled to pay benefits amid a wave joblessness not seen since the Great Depression.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said internal border closures were unlikely to lift before Christmas, as the country on Monday reported a record single day rise in COVID-19 deaths. There was, however, some evidence that drastic lockdown measures in the city of Melbourne were having an effect, with daily new infections in the state of Victoria slowing to a near two week low. “I am more hopeful of that today than I was in the course of the past week,” Morrison told reporters in Canberra, as he called on state leaders to cooperate to allow stranded residents to return home.

(Reuters) – Korean automaker Hyundai Motor Co <005380.KS> is creating a family of electric vehicles it will sell under the Ioniq brand as part of its drive to become the world’s third-largest seller of EVs by 2025, the company said on Sunday.
Hyundai said the elevation of Ioniq from an individual vehicle nameplate to a brand will help support its goal of capturing 10% of global EV sales in 2025.
With electric vehicles still struggling to gain traction in most major markets, Hyundai’s main competitors will likely include traditional automakers Volkswagen AG <VOWG_p.DE> and General Motors Co <GM.N>, both of which have announced plans to build and sell a million or more electric vehicles a year by 2025.
California-based Tesla Inc <TSLA.O>, which makes only electric vehicles, aims to retain its current position as the world’s EV leader. Chief Executive Elon Musk has said he expects the company to sell “a few million” vehicles in 2025.
Ioniq was launched four years ago as a vehicle name plate under the Hyundai brand. The compact hatchback was offered with a choice of three powertrains: Conventional gas-electric hybrid, plug-in hybrid and pure battery electric. Those models will continue in production.
Starting in early 2021, Hyundai said it plans to introduce three all-electric models under the Ioniq brand. They include the Ioniq 5, a midsize crossover based on the 2019 Hyundai 45 concept; in 2022, the Ioniq 6 sedan, based on the Hyundai Prophecy concept unveiled earlier this year, and in early 2024, the Ioniq 7, a large crossover.
The three new Ioniq models will be built on a dedicated EV platform known internally as E-GMP, for Electric Global Modular Platform, which will “enable fast charging capability and plentiful driving range,” the company said in a statement.

“What do we do with the Clintons now?” HBO’s Bill Maher questioned, describing Hillary but especially Bill as a “big distraction” for the Democrats ahead of the November election.
But former Clinton White House adviser Paul Begala balked, to which Maher immediately pointed out that alleged Epstein victim Virginia Giuffre said she witnessed Bill Clinton at the island along with “two young girls” there also.
Maher insisted that the Clintons remain a liability for the Democratic Party, not letting Begala ingore the question. At that point the interview with the now CNN commentator got awkward as Maher brought the issue of Bill Clinton’s presence on Epstein’s ‘orgy island’ front and center. Here’s the key segment:
The HBO Real Time host then alluded to “Bill Clinton, a horny guy, on sex island…”:
“Now, Bill Clinton. People are saying that there are witnesses who saw him on Jeffrey Epstein’s sex island,” Maher began. “Obviously, it’s denied.”
Begala, who served as a White House adviser during Clinton’s administration, shook his head in disapproval — but Maher doubled down.
“You shake your head like, ‘Oh that’s impossible! Bill Clinton, a horny guy, on sex island? Ridiculous!'” Maher mocked.
“Look, it’s possible,” emphasized in what was a clearly uncomfortable moment for ex-Clinton aide Begala.
Maher has long argued that it’s better for the DNC if the Clintons both stayed away from the convention and kept a very low profile amidst multiple raging controversies, especially the Epstein saga.
“My question is, you know, [Clinton] has assets and he has … things that are not quite assets,” Maher questioned. “And same with Hillary. What do the Democrats — what should they do?”
The brief exchange from the Friday night Real Time show generated a number of headlines highlighting the clip, given also the major networks have appeared to conveniently and intentionally ignore the explosive allegations contained in recently unsealed court documents from 2011, centered on Epstein accuser Virginia Giuffre’s testimony.
