Celebrated Abolitionist Johns Hopkins Exposed As "Slave Owner"

Celebrated Abolitionist Johns Hopkins Exposed As “Slave Owner”
Tyler Durden
Fri, 12/11/2020 – 18:40

Baltimore-based Johns Hopkins University, the leading provider of COVID-19 data, announced Wednesday that its founder owned slaves, contrary to the long-time narrative that Hopkins was a wealthy philanthropist and abolitionist.

Researchers Martha S. Jones and Allison Seyler uncovered the new information in government census records as they were on a quest to explore the university’s history. For more than a century, the long-held narrative of Hopkins, an abolitionist, whose father freed the family’s slaves in 1807, has recently come into question.

University President Ronald J. Daniels and other school officials published an open letter Wednesday saying the findings “complicate the understanding we have long had of Johns Hopkins as our founder.”

“We now have government census records that state Mr. Hopkins was the owner of one enslaved person listed in his household in 1840 and four enslaved people listed in 1850,” the letter said. “By the 1860 census, there are no enslaved persons listed in the household.”

“It calls to mind not only the darkest chapters in the history of our country and our city but also the complex history of our institutions since then, and the legacies of racism and inequity we are working together to confront,” the letter continued.

Hopkins died in 1873 at age 78. As an entrepreneur and investor, he accumulated a massive amount of wealth that was used to establish a hospital, orphanage, and the university.

Officials said the researchers would continue to dig deeper to get a better picture of the founder’s past.

As more and more schools begin to confront their connection with slavery, such as Princeton and Georgetown, in the last couple of years, they also may consider how to make amends in a world overrun by social justice warriors.

It’s only a matter of time before social justice warriors target a monument to Johns Hopkins at the university.

All Hopkins needs to do at this point is to launch a new scholarship program for slave descendants for everyone to forget about the founder’s history.

Supreme Court Tosses Texas Bid To Overturn Election

Supreme Court Tosses Texas Bid To Overturn Election
Tyler Durden
Fri, 12/11/2020 – 18:38

The Supreme Court on Friday tossed a last-minute bid by the state of Texas to overturn the 2020 election by challenging the results of four battleground states.

Citing a lack of standing, Justice Samuel Alito wrote in a brief order that the state “has not demonstrated a judicially cognizable interest in the manner in which another State conducts its elections,” adding “All other pending motions are dismissed as moot.”

In doing so, the justices shut down a long-shot bid for Texas to challenge Biden’s wins in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Georgia and Wisconsin – which was joined by 17 other states and over 100 House Republicans.

Justices Clarence Thomas joined Alito in stating that they do not believe the court has the authority to outright reject Texas’s request, writing instead “I would therefore grant the motion to file the bill of complaint but would not grant other relief, and I express no view on any other issue.”

Earlier in the day, President Trump tweeted: “If the Supreme Court shows great Wisdom and Courage, the American People will win perhaps the most important case in history, and our Electoral Process will be respected again!”

Notably, Trump appointed three of the court’s nine members – causing Democrats to cry foul at the prospect of the highest court in the land deciding the outcome of the 2020 election. Trump himself suggested several times that filling Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s seat with Justice Amy Coney Barrett was essential in the event that the election ended up at the Court.

The case was filed by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who asked the Court to invalidate over 20 million votes in the above-mentioned states so that their GOP-controlled state legislatures could decide who won instead.

US Supreme Court DENIES Texas election lawsuit for ‘lack of standing’

The US Supreme Court rejected the request by Texas to sue four battleground states for improperly administered elections, citing “lack of standing” under the Constitution. Justices Alito and Thomas dissented.

The court announced on Friday evening that the motion by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton was denied the leave to file “for lack of standing under Article III of the Constitution.”

Texas has not demonstrated a judicially cognizable interest in the manner in which another State conducts its elections. All other pending motions are dismissed as moot.

Justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas dissented from the decision, saying they would have granted the motion to file the complaint, “but would not grant other relief” and express “no view on any other issue.”

Brazil lower house speaker warns of ‘fiscal abyss’ after spending bill debate delayed

December 11, 2020

By Maria Carolina Marcello

BRASILIA (Reuters) – Brazil is heading into a “fiscal abyss” and a serious crisis next year, following the decision to postpone parliamentary debate on a bill extending emergency aid spending, lower house speaker Rodrigo Maia said on Friday

Earlier on Friday, Senator Marcio Bittar said that he would no longer present his proposal for debate until next year due to its “complexity.”

Speaking at a ceremony in Brasilia on Friday evening, a visibly irritated Maia accused the government of trying to undermine the chamber, which is raising political and financial risks for the country at a delicate juncture.

“Now, once again, with Marcio Bittar’s decision not to propose the emergency bill … we are going to enter a huge fiscal abyss next year, because what (Economy Minister) Paulo Guedes said was emergency, turns out is not emergency,” Maia said.

The emergency constitutional amendment would be similar to the ‘State of Calamity’ bill passed at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic this year, which paved the way for huge emergency spending that circumvented the government’s strict fiscal rules.

The emergency income transfer program that gave a lifeline to around 30 million of Brazil’s poorest families this year as the economy tipped into deep recession expires on Dec. 31.

There is growing political pressure for some form of aid to continue next year, but public finances are so stretched it is unclear how it would be funded.

Maia also said a constitutional tax reform bill in congress is ready but will not be voted on, because the government does not want it to be seen as a victory for Maia.

“Tax reform is ready. It has the votes. But it will not be voted on because it is Rodrigo Maia’s tax reform, that’s all,” he said.

Economy Minister Paulo Guedes said on Friday that there has been some “difficulty” in making progress on tax reform.

Tesla to replace Apartment Investment and Management in the S&P 500 Index

December 11, 2020

By Saqib Iqbal Ahmed

NEW YORK (Reuters) -Apartment Investment and Management Co will be removed from the S&P 500 as of Dec. 21 to make room for the inclusion of Tesla Inc, S&P Dow Jones Indices said on Friday.

Apartment Investment and Management, which is spinning off Apartment Income REIT in a deal expected to be completed post market close on Monday, will no longer be representative of the S&P Composite 1500 indices market cap ranges, S&P Dow Jones Indices said in a statement.

The company has a market value of about $6 billion and its stock is down 21% this year. By contrast, Tesla’s stock market value stands at around $600 billion, and its shares are up 600% year-to-date.

“The subtraction of this relatively small REIT doesn’t have a significant impact on the index at all, but the addition of Tesla does have a big impact,” said Tim Ghriskey, chief investment strategist at Inverness Counsel in New York.

Adding Elon Musk’s Tesla to Wall Street’s most followed benchmark will force index funds to buy over $70 billion worth of its shares, while simultaneously selling shares of other S&P 500 constituents.

The electric car maker’s stock has surged nearly 50% since Nov. 16, when it was announced Tesla would join the index.

“Definitely, traders have been accumulating the stock significantly in anticipation of the indexes having to buy on the first day of trading,” Ghriskey said.

Tesla will account for just over 1% of the S&P 500.

California-based Tesla’s meteoric rise has made it by far the most valuable auto company in the world, despite production that is a fraction of rivals such as Toyota Motor, Volkswagen and General Motors.

Apartment Investment and Management Co’s shares, which closed down 0.5% at $40.58 on Friday, slipped to $39.00 in extended trading. Tesla shares, which closed down 2.7% at $609.99, was little changed after the close.
